Yes I did get more into it as it progressed so I shall stay with it.

I read the book back in the year dot - my Penguin is priced at 3/6.

The 1992 movie won Emma Thompson best actress award. Anthony Hopkins and Vanessa Redgrave also starred. As a romantic movie it cannot be improved on joining such classics as Kramer v Kramer, the French Lieutenant's Woman. Madison County and Elvira Madigan.

The Sunday Times gave away a zillion DVDs of the movie which are now available for a pound or two on eBay. There is also a remastered version.

I love the current BBC production.

Through clever casting, a great deal of effort on the settings and costumes and above all clever updating of E M Forster's dialog the BBC has produced something sharper and more defined. They have avoided the impossible task of improving on the 1992 movie and instead created a very commercial production which will win more applause than criticism.

The longer running time compared to the movie might by some feel to be boring. Au contraire they have used it to improve the dialog and more fully recreate the ambience of an Edwardian England which was fully aware of its imminent demise.

I do love a Sunday night drama. But I cannot get into this version of Howards End at all.

I keep comparing it to the Merchant Ivory film, which was sumptuous.

I also keep looking at the tv versions, and saying to myself 'I know where that is' so am not concentrating on it at all.

Far from dull - I'm enjoying it, I haven't read the book or seen other productions so have no pre-conceptions. And Tibby is great!

I keep thinking the character is loosely based on Noel Coward but he is strange. I am still watching for the costumes etc but for me I would rather have Downton or Mr Selfridge

I'm watching it, Ann. I found the first episode a bit disjointed but the second episode brought everything together for me. The young lad is a bit hard to take though.

Anybody watched it? I am watching last night’s recording and still have not really got a clue what is going on.
