I came over to GC from FR free, but in order to post it cost £5 in subs, same as FR charges.the boards were un-threaded then, and you couldnt C&P any links or post an email address......I didnt re-new again till 05.

loads have not re-newed over the past few years and sadly many have passed away.

I think "Mable/Mildred posts now and again.

A lot of people got fed up with the problems on GR, and the fact that they are often not fixed by the company, by the fact that GR now seems to be the very poor orphan in the "stable", so that it often feels as if we're hanging in there by our fingernails as the company sometimes seems determined to drive this site into the ground.

Others found their lives were getting more and more complicated, and they either could not afford the time or the money to continue subscribing.

I know a lot of them do still look on the site, read posts .............. because some of us get messages from them asking for information to be posted on a particular thread.

There's also no doubt that the site has lost a lot of the members who used to spend most of their time helping others research their families, and spend just a short time on the Chat Board. That was because there is actually so little help being requested that it sometimes seems as if the ones remaining are competing to be first with the information, just to have something to do!

I agree with Barbara - without some of the people on this thread I would have never got over my depression a few years ago - when I was stuck in the house for several weeks and had to be quite still for a long while & not able to watch TV as not able to look up to see the screen.

I just wish those people were all still around on GR

I joined in May 2003 and still here holding on by my claws

I still find a few people who are friendly - but its not the same feel it use to have - some people seem very snappy.

I still like it though as i feel happy on the chat area here - perhaps its because we are all older & some people still want to help you and be friends.

Welcome back JackieJ. I joined in March 2003 and have been on here ever since. OK there are fewer of us but we still chat, maybe we chat to different people these days but we are still a friendly lot and there is still a lot of support here for each other. :-) :-)

I have had to ask Genes to remove 2 accounts and trees because of death.
My brother in law had a tree on here - my sister had no knowledge of this, so if I hadn't realised - it would still be here - messages unanswered.
When my mother died, I looked - and found she too had a tree on here.

I also know of 2 people who are no longer members who have trees on here.

So, I am just one member who has had to have 2 trees deleted, and knows of 2 'ignored' trees - puts 163 unanswered messages into perspective.

My tree is still on here - but I haven't had any messages for over 4 years!!
I can only presume I've 'met' any distant cousins - until I add more people...

Harswell ..............

"In the early days there were a lot more members not the few now who are not really interested in their trees .I have 163 unread messages for the last three years so most have left or are not interested."

OR they've died or become incapacitated and no member of their family knows how to delete the tree.

GR does NOT delete trees, it has to be done by the owner, or by someone who knows the sign-in and password

Looking at the age of those of us who have been members since 2002-2005 ............. I'd guess that a lot of people have died or are seriously ill..

I have been a member since Feb 2004 and will be leaving Feb 2018.
In the early days there were a lot more members not the few now who are not really interested in their trees .I have 163 unread messages for the last three years so most have left or are not interested.
For those who are still interested GOOD SEARCHING!! :-)
