B&M bargains (Great Yarmouth) had loads of tubs of Bird's custard this afternoon!

One less on their shelf now - it's in my cupboard ;-) :-D

So tummies don't need to be full to explode! :-D :-D :-D

Apparently it's all down to the cornflour which I almost always add a little of as a thickener to a sweet sauce along with eggs, etc.

I make my cheese sauce with no eggs but, again, use cornflour as a thickener and lashings of grated cheese, of course.

We were taught at school to use only cornflour, never SR or plain flour. It's worked a treat as we have someone with coeliac disease in the family and he never has to worry about the sauce I produce.

Perhaps it's a good job we weren't aware of this aspect of cornflour because someone would surely have tried it out at school. There's always one ..... :-D

yes ,they are 50gms bigger than they were, we managed to find some at asda in hastings , not a shop we use very often ,its 15 miles away from us .but we had to go into the town for something else ,so we tried it . thank you all for your help ...hubby is now a happy man ... :-D

Waitrose stock it, I bought some a couple of weeks ago. Drums and sachets.

you can get it here too, but it is hard to find. The supermarkets keeping moving it around and no two of them have it in the same place.

The Sainsburys online shopping site stocks Bird's Custard Powder 350g for £1.30.
As I’ve an aversion to custard, brought on the yucky lumpy stuff at Primary School, it’s not something we normally look for.

The premade stuff in cartons is cloyingly sweet.

Real custard as described by JoyLouise is called "creme anglais" by the French. They are very fond of it.

The French are also big fans of Bird's which they call, wait for it, "custaaaard" - drag the last syllable. They like that too so maybe the French have bought the stock fearing brexit price rises.

Creme anglais is super with some things but not with such classics as jam rolypoly and spotted dick. Also it does not congeal leaving a delish skin on top. On balance Christmas pud is better with creme anglais.

I bought a round tin not much different to 50 years ago in J Sainsbury in August. It was for my mum but she suddenly passed away so now it is on my shelf.

The ersatz products in packets and what not are no good at all.

sainsburys(at least MY local one) stopped doing the 3 pack lo fat a few months ago,couldn't find it in Morrisons either...

I have one in the freezer bought it about 2 months ago from Morrisons.

So do Tesco's.

Sainsburys sell them.bought one about 3 months ago.

I never use custard but always make white sauce from scratch, using cornflour as we were taught, Iris.

Add sugar for a sweet sauce and if you want to present custard why not add a few drops of colouring (and a drop or two of vanilla essence if you so wish).

Unless you find the Birds before you next need it, of course.

They are still around, but hard to find! I bought one about a month ago from Asda.

has anyone else had trouble getting birds custard powder in the round drums, I have tried local shops and supermarkets, and all I can find are the ones you add water to , or the ready made . when I have asked why they are not doing it now all they say is...we cant get it !! are they still around or have they gone to the wall?? : iris :-|
