Can't always rely on what it says anyway. Took me quite a while to find gt. grandmother's birth, got her marriage certificate, gave fathers name on it. When I found her birth, she was born in workhouse, mother went in with 3 children & came out with 4.Got her birth cert. on it said illegitimate. Found her supposed father died 3 years earlier. Did'nt say deceased on marriage cert.

“What’s your father’s name & occupation? “

1- “Joseph Bloggs, a bricklayer “
2- “Joseph Bloggs but he’s dead” ( A dead person doesn’t have an occupation)
3- “ Joseph Bloggs. He’s dead but used to be a bricklayer”
4- Thinks - I’m illegitimate & never knew who my father was. I’ll make something up & say he’s died.

It would often normal too for the father not to annotated as deceased even though he was.Depends how the question was asked by the priest or registrars

That can throw the searches out for census and death year

Yes quite normal if the father has passed before the wedding

would anyone know, under the fathers name on a marriage certificate dating 1862 in Ipswich, it looks like it reads 'deceased' but not sure on that. Would that have been a common thing to write?
