This is one of the old council houses, they were built to the same pattern as farm cottages, largely for the benefit of farm workers.

Stairs inside front door, three up, three down originally because they had a downstairs bathroom. Cold water only, when we moved in, and an outside lavatory. The ones down the village had their lavatories down the garden.

The gardens are large to enable the man to grow enough to feed his family and, maybe, keep a few fowls and to provide enough room for his children to play safely.

That’s interesting Sharron, I just love that sort of story, I’ll see if I can find out more about “my” cottage.

I was born in a farm cottage that was built in 1808. My grandfather had been born in the same room some eighty odd years before.

His mother had had a lot of children so there was a door knocked between two two bedroomed cottages to turn them into one. There was a bucket lavvy down the garden and a well across the road.

When we left there in Jan 1964, to live in this council house, we had been paying 6/- a week rent.

I went on a virtual journey to see what it looks like now and in 2014 it as worth almost 1/2 a million, it was owned by two sisters in 1953 which is the year I was born, they allowed us to live there rent free because Dad was recovering from rheumatic fever and couldn’t work. When Dad took me there about 8 or 9 years ago it was still owned and rented out by the same family. I don’t know yet when it was built though.
