Strictly speaking you should be able to remove the item in parentheses without altering the meaning of the sentence. Of course if you can't conceive of a woman being an engineer then there is no ambiguity. |

I wouldn't figure out if she said her husband was the engineer or if they were saying his wife was the engineer. |
