I am pretty sure he was the assistant engineer and not his wife.

If you narrow search to 1894 Devon ... richard hutchings... (keyword) weir.

There are 5 results, would have added below item to your other look up 'Thread', if I had seen it, always find more afterwards, lol)

12 September 1894 - Exeter and Plymouth Gazette - Exeter, Devon, England

The funeral of Richard Hutchings...

10 September 1894 - Exeter and Plymouth Gazette - Exeter, Devon, England

THE RECENT FATALITY IN EXETER.
The adjourned inquest on the body of Richard Hutchings, who died from injuries received while working at the Head Weir Paper Mills on Thursday...

I read it as his wife telling the court that her husband was an Assistant Engineer.

Strictly speaking you should be able to remove the item in parentheses without altering the meaning of the sentence. Of course if you can't conceive of a woman being an engineer then there is no ambiguity.

I wouldn't figure out if she said her husband was the engineer or if they were saying his wife was the engineer.

In 1894 I guess I should of know better but you just never know, maybe they were both engineers.

Chris, you are always so good at finding my old threads, and making me feel dumb for asking the question twice. Maybe I should erase them all and start again :-P <3 <3

errmm...(think I'm now confused too, lol. Not sure if I've caused any upset, do hope not!).

Can I just add, that by posting reference to an old 'Thread' it is done purely to give us any more help. As Sylvia had done the 'legwork' in this case, I didn't need to add certain things.

My intention was (as always) to help, something I take very seriously, and would never wish to offend anybody, or make them feel the way you do!. Can only apologise.

It was certainly a sad tale for poor Richard, and his family.

Chris :)
