A bit late, but I'm not long home from helping at a primary school, where they celebrated World Book Day today.
Many children had got their outfits ready to dress up last week, but bad weather meant they couldn't get to school. The headteacher thought that flimsy costumes would not be practical in freezing snowy weather, so the celebration was postponed until today.
We had a great time.
Staff also dressed up and many of the lessons had a book theme.

The children had been invited to bring in a book, which they had finished with and swap it for another. The staff supervised this and set the books out, by reading level. All the children had the chance to choose one to take home.
Lovely to see the children enthusiastically looking for a book to suit them.

The school where I volunteer decided earlier this week to postpone their dressing up until next week. They had visions of children being clothed quite unsuitably for the biting snowy conditions, I think.

They are very keen on promoting reading and the children love the themed days, when they're held. There is no compulsion to buy expensive outfits, as there is also a competition to decorate a potato as a book character and it's great to see the imaginative ideas produced.

Staff and helpers usually dress up and a good time is had by all.

Reading is the key to so much. It's good to let the children see a fun side of it too.
