True grit!

It is snowing again here and I was very impressed that the paper man came this morning until I remembered doing the same myself in similar, maybe worse conditions.Young and silly then, wouldn't go into work now!

Many moons ago, when I was a young full-time van driver, I worked for a main agent so was able to have my van fitted with an Arctic thermostat which meant I could drive about with a red hot heater and the obligatory elbow out. I have always been one to open my window when stationary anyway.

One particular day, before the Petersfield by-pass was built, or, probably even under consideration, I was in the usual endless queue through Petersfield on the A3 when the weather was closing in and the gritting gangs were busy.

The one doing the A3 was working with shovels from the back of a flat-bed (Health and Safety was a bit rudimentary then) and flinging it on to the road as it rolled along.

They were rolling along, going the other way and I was in the queue with my window open and a shovel full of grit in your lap is extremely heavy I can assure you.

Sharron, with true grit did you simply roll up your window without cursing?

Incidentally, in front of our house this week, a council tractor came past towing a trailer with two men standing in the back doing exactly as you described - throwing grit onto the road.
