So different now from when I was a child in the 40s/50s.
Things had to be bought close to the day as there were no fridges then. Even when I was first married in the 60s I would queue up for bread, meat and vegetables the day before Christmas, and we would have to make sure we had food for two (or three if Christmas day was a Saturday or Sunday) days. We would have to order enough milk to last and if you didn't have a fridge (I did in the 60s but parents didn't in the early 50s) you had to stand the milk somewhere, probably outside, in the cold so it didn't go off. Not that we had central heating then so there was probably a cold area indoors.

Everything was cooked the day before or on the day. Mum would make the cake early but Dad would ice and decorate it on Christmas eve while Mum made the mince pies.

Sometimes the large capon that we had needed plucking so that would be done Christmas eve. I don't remember when we started to have turkey but Capons then were a treat.
