Our regional news programme after 6 p.m. news yesterday featured this story.

Many people have been going into the shop just to see the letter.

Amateur genealogists have helped track a grandaughter of Marjorie, who was very pleased to hear of the letter and her family's connection to it.

The lady has several postcards, which Marjorie sent to her daughter, the lady's mother, so it sounds like a family who will treasure this Christmas letter.

Marjorie lived in Sussex and died there in 1965 and is buried in Mayfield

Visited great-grandson (4 yesterday) last week who instantly wanted to show me how he could write his name!

This is a lovely story.

Shirley, back in the day most children could write that well at 5. I have a letter from my mother, aged 5, to her father telling him she loved him. It starts off "this is the first letter I have written..." and the writing is at least as good as the one by Marjorie. No learning through play - you sat at a desk and practised the 3 R's until you could do it.

I just phoned the toy shop to tell them we are on the case!

The response was great and I said we hope to be able to give them an update of news at some time.

Thank you all for your searching and well done Choccy.
That looks like the correct family.

Seems that the children's father died very young

I wonder though if she was really aged 5 as that's excellent writing for a five year old

Looks like writing of a much older child
