I can't remember what I was doing so it can't have been anything very exciting!

My house sale had just fallen through and OH and I were upstairs watching the spectacular fireworks over the city, which they were for the millenium, and thinking it would be the last New Year I would see in from that house.

Jules was very good as usual, or at least we enjoyed him.

The only thing I enjoyed was that for a couple of years I 'waited-on' at private parties. Excellent money, plenty to eat and when the hosts and guests were p**sed enough, plenty to drink.

I was taught that the object was to get everyone as drunk as possible as quickly as possible :-D :-D

Allan, I enjoyed it when I was a young thing, partying with my friends and going to Trafalgar a couple of times :-0 oh no, we won't go there again...…

I think it has got too OTT, like Christmas :-( We'll probably watch Jules on the tele though :-D

In 1936 my grandparents got married 1st jan. It was not a public holiday in England then.
In 1999 I was at home with my children aged 4 and 2 and in bed before midnight until the neighbours woke us with fireworks that were so loud , my elderly neighbour the other side thought WW3 had started and phoned the police!!! they reassured her it wasn't war but millennium fireworks celebrations...poor old lady!

We celebrated in the South as we usually do, in bed well before midnight!

Personally, like Island, I have never understood what all the fuss is about, even when I lived in the UK. :-S

I'm also old enough to remember when New Year's Day in England and Wales was not a Public Holiday. They had Boxing Day. In Scotland, the reverse was true, the Scots had New Year's Day as a holiday, but not Boxing Day

That sounds like something certain sections of the media promulgated, How on earth could computer errors make pubs charge an entrance fee.

In fact software firms had recognised the problem years before and had made the necessary corrections in time. Of course there were a few relatively minor incidents around the world and some more serious for a number of pregnant women in Sheffield.

Hosting a 2 night private party at a 77 bedroom hotel. About 130 guests.

We were here in this house with our daughter and our late much missed son in law and their three boys, we celebrated at home then the next morning we went for a walk and listened to all the church bells ringing.

Went out to celebrate with OH and friends at a village shindig :-D :-D :-D

With family at a hotel in Ayrshire. I was 15 so I was allowed wine with dinner and to toast in the bells so I felt very grown up. :-D

With family probably. Tbh, I just don't get the hysteria surrounding a new calendar ;-)
In the northern hemisphere we have new beginnings in nature to look forward to and daylight stretching out but what does 'new year mean to those in the south?

It has been 20 years since the new millennium started.

There was widespread celebrations across the world.
