Merging accounts after bereavement

No you can add oeople from one tree to another tree quite easily, you just need a person common to both trees.

Suppose on an Ancestry account there are two trees which I shall call JONES and SMITH. The common person is "Jack Jones" for whom there is lots of info on the JONES tree but only two items on SMITH. The object is to copy the JONES info into SMITH.

With the SMITH tree in focus search for "Jack Jones" using additional data such as dob, place. Once you have the result then copy that onto the SMITH tree which will now be in focus. Voila the SMITH tree now has much enhanced info for "Jack Jones".

Such an exercise can be repeated as often as needed. Be careful to check the validity of the data being copied.

I do not think you can merge trees on Ancestry,only people on the same tree.

I originally had seperate trees for my paternal and maternal sides,I recently had to re -enter my maternal one in order to make just the one tree :-0

You cannot merge GR trees using the GR web site. Nada, no way.

One approach would be to use an Ancestry account ( they do a 14 daya free trial if you don't have an account with them. Ancestry have quite sophisticated tree management functions way beyond GR and you can have as many trees as you like.

Export the trees to gedcom format. Remember ONLY the text data and notes will be exported nothing else.

Import the trees to Ancestry which allows more than one tree. The two trees can easily be merged and edited using Ancestry tools.
You can then export the merged tree to GEDCOM and import it to GR remembering that any existing tree wil be overwritten.

I would recommend that you use Ancestry or FMP in the long run rather than GR which has all manner of gotchas.

Hi,

Hoping someone can advise.
My husband recently passed, he had been using his late fathers account for his tree and I am currently using my own.

I am looking for the best way to combine so that we can retain the info on my tree and close the other account.

Has anyone had experience of doing this? There is alot of data and hard work on their so would hate to lose any of it.
