Surely it's cats that 'clutter off'?
Anything - treasured ornaments, precious mementos etc - on a shelf that they wish to inhabit for a few minutes is deftly de-cluttered, with the cat muttering 'clutter off'.

But that rubbish makes a space look untidy which you can do by hanging about in it when you should be cluttering off somewhere else!

I’ve heard about cluttering about, as in hanging about and getting in the way. But have never heard cluttering off.

I haven't heard it for some time but I remember a conversation about animals getting out and living wild, particularly the wallabies in the woods at Slindon.

The bloke I was talking to said that there was supposed to be an escaped chimpanzee cluttering about somewhere in the hills.

Never heard the term 'clutter off' but I might have heard 'clutter about' but probably thought people were saying 'clatter about' meaning making a fuss and noise eg when looking for something.

Reading Tawny's thread which has evolved into a thread about pronunciation has started me wondering, again, if it is only locally that people 'clutter off' when they go away.

It is also possible to 'clutter about'.
