All of Findmypast’s British census records (1841-1911) are completely free to access from 10:00 (BST) on 30 April until 3 May.

Depending on the county you live you can access Ancestry Library Edition and Find my Past at home as long as you have a library card.

This applies during the current lockdown.

Public libraries in the UK have the UK records version of Ancestry which you can use for free so long as you have a library card.
Also from anywhere Ancestry give free access to the 1881 census.
For modern records this is quite good

Be aware that Freebmd has some quite large gaps, esp after 1940 and misc errors of which the most annoying is missing records for marriages.
It is quick and v useful once you have the hang of it. Ancestry has a better version of it.

A good source for free wartime records is the London Gazette but it only covers officers from sub-Lt up plus WO1 & WO2.

Hi everyone. I need help please (not just with my mind lol) I started my tree back in 2002 after my dad passed awayIve done pretty well on my mums side thanks to the people on Genes & their advice etc...I have also been trying to find my husbands grandparents details (a promise I made to his aunt that I would try my best,I hit a brick wall at the time. Unfortunately she has now passed away) I have found more details but can't access anything (I tried when it came up that it was a free weekend to search, which I did but it said I had to subscribe to actually 'view' the records...Im so disappointed. I used to have emails with 'free to view' census/parish records. Its coming up to 20yrs of researching soon and would really appreciate if anyone can help me find a site link I don't have to subscribe to.Even if its a 'pay as you go' site I don't mind paying for certificates but I'm on a very low income and seriously cant afford to pay for a whole subscription charge...I previously tried a 14 day 'free trial' but had a major headache trying to cancel it. I would be very grateful if anyone can advise/help or point me in the right direction please.TIA
