A stupid question, but how do you search on the GRO website? I only know it from ordering certs and registering. :-S

Sheila
Go to GRO site and login as usual, then select Search...........

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp

You then choose a year to search births or deaths.

NB
You are required to specify the sex of the person.

Very useful for finding full names of people and for finding mother's maiden name for births before 1911.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I did go on GRO and searched but to no avail. The birth is a living relative in my family and quite young. I simply cannot understand how it doesnt show up?

I have asked the family member if they have a birth cert but they havent come back to me.

Just a thought, what would happen if this child hasnt been registered? Would it have come to light somehow sooner as they are approaching 10 years old?

I would have thought that their GP etc would have wanted the berth cert to register them and certainly for school?

Heres hoping they will come back to me soon & solve the mystery. It has only come to light because i couldnt remember if they were 9 or 10 this year!

There have always been some missing registrations on GRO.
The birth is registered at the local Registry Office, then is sent to GRO for entry into the National Registry, but there have been missing ones. No-one really knows why.

But try looking up the local Registry Office ................. this is very easy if the county is in the Online Parish Clerks site. Lancashire, for example, is one of the really good ones

Check this site to see if there is any help ...

The sites are free!

Where did the birth take place?

GRO only covers England and Wales.

If it was a birth in Scotland you need to look on Scotlands People, where you'll find births up to 2021:

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

However, as you're a long-time GR member, I expect you know that.

Or perhaps the name isn't spelled the way you expect?

Florence61 Report 20 Oct 2021 23:07

I got a copy of the birth certificate. It was registered in kent. All spellings as the should be although i did try different ones.

I went on the gro site as i am a member but couldnt see it there either..Was very strange.

The name might have got mis-transcribed between the Registry Office and GRO, although that is less likely given that it was so recent.

Just checked for my youngest grt granddaughter born 2008 and she shows

Maybe there’s a typing error on their site that stops it coming up
