If you have difficulty downloading the file from GR, which, as Nameslessone says, is quite common, email [email protected].

They will take a few days to reply, but should be able to complete the download for you.

Well, at least, that's what happened with me - but that was several years ago. I haven't tried it recently.

Christine, people seem to have problems doing a gedcoms from Genes. It is probably down to the old programming they use.

ArgyllGran thank you for the information. I think it best I leave well alone ?? I think I will join Ancestry and , if I have understood correctly, can import my family tree there and then if I want to can delete the in laws on that one. Better safe than sorry. Thank you for your good advice

You should have an ancestors option, so if you have yourself selected then by opting for the Ancestors button, along from immediate family button, you should then get your own ancestors.
I think if you click on any name in your tree, however far back, choosing the ancestors button will then give you that persons ancestors, or that persons descendants if you choose.

Hi I am shown as married to my husband but not sure what you mean ? Do I click on my name in the full family tree ? I click on my name in the immediate family but have to keep clicking through each generation. When I select full family tree it starts with me, my husband and children but then follows my husbands family and the line to my parents is a long way up. I am sorry if I am not using the correct terminology. I am obviously missing something. That is why I wanted to have my husband’s family tree separate. Obviously my husband’s tree is also my children’s so just as important. Thank you for responding everyone.

Christine, are you not ‘attached’ to your husband, in which case you should be able to tap on your own name and ‘your’ tree should pop up?

No sure what you mean by "import the details on a shared tree".

If you're talking about Gedcom files, be aware that if you import a Gedcom file to an existing tree on GR, it will over-write the existing tree, which will then be lost.

Oh, I see what you mean - ie - if your family member shares their tree with you, can you import those details to your own tree?

If your family member downloads a Gedcom file of their tree, they can email it to you, and you can then upload it - but remember that it will over-write everything that 's already there.

Unless you are happy to lose everything you have already put on your tree, you should only upload the shared tree's Gedcom to a new GR tree.

Good Morning I am not very technical and when I look at my full tree it starts with my husbands family and my family do not appear until a long way up (?) and whilst I can search for a particular family ancestor , I find the process quite laborious scrolling to find the beginning or most recent member of a family line. I have not been active on GR for a few years so I might not be using the site in the most effective manner. I thought going forward it would be easier for my children and grandchildren if the family trees were split. I suppose it is just personal preference. Thank you all for responding. Is it possible to import the details on a shared tree? Another in law family member also has tree on GR.

I have my tree on offline software so it is more easy to manipulate,

I have both mine & OH split into several parts.

It was done to make things easier because of the size of some parts a d the different areas they come from.

My mother has one tree, my father has two. My MIL has one my FIL one.

I have thought about splitting mums tree into two but haven’t got around to doing it.

It also helps when sharing parts of the tree as relatives don’t want all the other side.

Added: here are the numbers of each tree 4067,1874/315,2026 and 2666. To have them all together is unmanageable.

I agree with Grannyfranny. I started my tree with me and my husband and then worked backwards with my ancestors and his ancestors.

After all, if you have children then both sides of the tree are their ancestors so why wouldn't you want both sides of the family in one place?

Not easy on GR.

To have two separate trees, you need two separate accounts with GR, though the second one can be a free registration.

For the new registration, you would need to log out of your existing account first, and register with a different email address, though I think you can use the same password.

Then download your existing tree as a GEDCOM file, and then upload it to your new account.

Then go through both, deleting the bits you don't want - one person at a time.

A lot of work!

I only keep a tiny bit of my tree on here so haven’t had this problem with Genes.

But I think you have already got the solution. I hope it is not a large tree.

I added my husbands family to my family tree and realised I should have created a separate tree. Any suggestions please to remedy this other than adding husbands family tree again to new tree then deleting from my tree. Thank you in advance
