I keep my house at 21 degrees but it is on automatic so it goes on and off and overnight it is set a few degrees lower.

It is well-insulated. It has cavity wall insulation and, years ago, K laid around 4 inches between the joists and a couple of years later our local council sent men to all pensioners’ homes to lay a layer of 4 inches free of charge. We told the guys we had done it and one of them said we may as well use what we were entitled to - so now it’s 8 inches thick.

Despite having more glass than most homes (big windows as well as three French doors along the back - two of them quadruple), the house is warm and retains heat very well.

I am like you, Kath, I like my home warm - and I have to say I am grateful for that £300 winter fuel allowance.

OMG - he has just put a thickish fleece top over his thick jumper.

My house is modern and has underfloor heating. Well insulated too so heating never on til after 4pm in winter and from mar to Oct never have the heating on unless its chilly.

Average is 21 degrees but once the room is warm, off it goes.

Hardly ever have the heating on in the bedroom and its usually around 17 degrees all the time.

I dont like extreme heat as it affects my asthma.

I think a lot depends on the insulation of the building. The flats my kids live in are modern and they hardly need the heating on unless it is really cold out.
My house is 1960’s. Modernising the thermostat and adding foam blocks behind the outer madding made a big difference.

I’m quite happy with low temps at night - he isn’t. It took years for him to understand that one needs to wear warmer pj’s and an extra jumper during the day - and he is still cold.

At the moment my thermostat sits a tad above 17 but never at 18, the L room radiator is never higher than 3.
If I turn these 2 things up I am mafted, the living room is not big.
All other radiators in the house sit at just a tad below 3., that's fine for me.
I can't do with it being over warm/hot. I'm 79.

My late husbad was the same until he became ill & he needed to be nice & warm, I struggled with the higher heat at that time.

I am 85 and usually keep the temp between 18 and 20 unless it is a very cold day, and the central heating is usually off on the timer between 10.00 and 1630. I might over ride it around 3 pm if I am going to be sitting still.

Just shows how different we all are. I'm in my seventies, but if we have our home or car heating over 19.5 deg I swelter.

I remember my mother being visited by someone from Age Concern when she was in her seventies. She was told that anyone over 70 should keep the room they used most of the day at 21.5 degrees. She always did and so do I. I hate to be cold.

17 deg is quite cool for a room you are sitting in, maybe ok if you are moving around. I would need a blanket and hot water bottle.
Interesting comment, I wonder who made that up?

Some research says we would be less stressed if we kept temperatures down at 17c.

Won’t do My stress levels any good as OH would be moaning his head off.
