Having been caught out a couple of times I am determined to stick to a few principles in future:
Get at least two quotes
Only use ones which will accept payment by credit card
Get a written quote, NOT an estimate
No work to start before a written quote received
Take recommendations e.g. on Facebook as invalid
Get an address from which they trade
Look for firms used by your friends and neighbours
If a limited company check it out on Companies House website
Avoid companies only recently registered

Quite so Brian.

You have suggested the golden rule. Get a quote or two, a written quote.

Never, ever accept an estimate.

Estimates can go up and up, and you will not have a leg to stand on :-0
