Found this thread very useful. Even after many years I have not really understood what a sixth cousin 8 times removed is. But got a much better idea now. Many thanks everybody. :-) :-)

Thank goodness my software works it out, cos I'm not that smart :-D

If I click on a name on my tree (not the GR one) it displays what the relationship is....... cousin, 4xgreat-grand aunt, 4th cousin 17 times removed lol

There's a rather simple way of doing it:
Find the most recent shared ancestor: a parent, a grandparent etc. Count the number of G's: counting both great and grand. So a great great grandfather has 3 G's.
Then
No G's: 0th cousins [i.e. siblings]
1 G: 1st cousins
2 Gs 2nd cousins
and so on:
G Gs: : horses!
The number of cousin is always the same as the number of Gs.
That's if you both have the same number of ancestors between you and the common ancestor. If the number is different then you are Gth cousins once removed, twice removed etc; but once it gets to this point I usually prefer to think "my mother's first cousin, my grandfather's second cousin" etc, and, what the hell, in the end I just call them all "cousins"... which is old fashioned, and it's used that way in Shakespeare.

Hi xxxxxx, I find this useful for a quick reference, you just enter in the siblings and work down from there in direct line of descent from each sibling :
Siblings
Children 1st cousins
Grandchildren 2nd Cousins
Great grandchildren 3rd Cousins
Gt Gt grandchildren 4th Cousins
Gt Gt Gt grandchildren 5th Cousins
Gt Gt Gt Gt grandchildren 6th Cousins

One generation before or after, is “Once Removed”
Two generations before/after are “Twice Removed”, etc.

Dermot posted an excellent easily understandable explanation which I unfortunately deleted.

thank goodness I have a calculator on family tree makers. Just one click and it works it all out for me lol
