St. Tysilio
(c.AD 548-640)
(Latin: Disilius; English: Tysilio)
Prince Tysilio (or Sulio) was the second son of Brochfael Ysgythrog (of the Tusks). He fled his father's court at an early age to throw himself on the mercy of Abbot Gwyddfarch of Caer-Meguaidd (Meifod) and beg to become a monk. A Powysian warband was sent to retrieve him, but King Brochfael was eventually persuaded that his son should be allowed to stay. Fearful of further trouble, however, Tysilio set up his base at a hermitage on Ynys Tyslio (Church Island) in the Menai Straits and became a great evangeliser on Ynys Mon (Anglesey). He spent seven years there before returning to Caer-Meguaidd (Meifod) and succeeding as Abbot. Tyslio rebuilt the Abbey Church and things were peaceful for a while. However, after the death of Tysilio's brother, his sister-in-law, Queen Gwenwynwyn, desired to marry him and place him on the throne of Powys. Objecting to both proposals, the saint refused and found his monastery persecuted by the state. So he resolved to leave for Brittany with a handful of followers. Tysilio travelled through Dyfed and across the Channel to St. Suliac where he established a second monastery. He died and was buried there in 640.

This is what i found on wikipedia

St. Tysilio was a Welsh bishop, prince and scholar, son of the reigning King of Powys, Brochwel Ysgithrog, maternal nephew of the great Abbot Dunod of Bangor Iscoed and an ecclesiastic who took a prominent part in the affairs of Wales during the distressful period at the opening of the 7th century.

Tysilio probably started his career in Trallwng Llywelyn (Welshpool) and afterwards took up residence in Meifod where he was associated with Gwyddvarch and St Beuno. He founded the second church in Meifod - the Eglwys Tysilio. His feast day, or gwyl-mabsant, was the 8th November which was also the date of the patronal festival and "wakes" in the nearby parish of Guilsfield, where a holy well was dedicated to him - the Fons Tysilio.

In the 7th century, the retard Church was a conglomeration of scattered churches,as they were all over Europe and Asia Minor.Saints could be canonised by the pope or by popular acclamation of other Christians according to custom. David, Patrick and Teilo were ordained in Armorica and consecrated bishops in Jerusalem by the Patriarch and St Patrick studied at Auxerre in the monastery of St Germain, where he became ordained a Catholic Priest and later Bishop. He was also canonised by acclamation by a local bishop. The canonisation of St Tysilio too was ratified by the authority of the bishop of St Asaph.

Today the name of Tysilio is remembered in several church and place names in north Wales; most famously in the longest place name in the UK, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, which translates into English as "Saint Mary's Church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio of the red cave". The name, however, is a late 19th century invention for the burgeoning tourist industry in the area.

I make it 4 wrong letters so marks out of ten for not looking for my platform ticket with it on and going from memory (I couldn't remember where I put the platform ticket anyway)...................The saints name is St tysilio who's he? I know that bit of the translation. I suppose someone will Google it.......sighs and goes back to F.H.

yes I can - decided to learn exactly how to pronounce it - can't quite remember the translation though - something about a well and of course the goch is red

can you say it Anne its one of the quirky things I always remember and both my daughter who were born in England and the other Hong Kong love to show off to their friends that they know. Val

think it's gyllgogerych but no doubt someone will put me right - I have a postcard somewhere with the railway station board - will have to find it

I don't think they could do much worse than the Yanks did with some of the 1881 transcribing.....

you're right Cariad, they can sound similar but why then can I never understand people in Indian call centres!!

LOL Val, I have always thought the indian and welsh accents sound quite similar, so may be they will do a good job.

I have just got of the phone with Merthyr Tydfil register office and was asking about BMD records and she informed me that in about 2 years they should be available on line That's the good news.......

The bad news is that they are being transcribed in.........................
