Look up the MayoClinic.com . full diagnosis on there
It is cureable.

The medications most commonly recommended for simple UTIs include amoxicillin (Amoxil, Trimox), ciprofloxacin (Cipro), nitrofurantoin (Furadantin, Macrodantin), sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (Bactrim, Septra) and trimethoprim (Proloprim, Trimpex). Make sure your doctor is aware of any other medications you're taking or any allergies you might have.

Usually symptoms clear up within a few days of treatment. However, you'll likely need to take antibiotics for three days to a week, depending on the severity of your infection. No matter what the length of treatment, take the entire course of antibiotics recommended by your doctor to ensure that the infection is completely eradicated.

I tried cranberry capsules for chronic cystitis, but it did not work. Am now trying cider vinegar, which seems to be working so far. Also appears to have lowered my blood pressure. Time will tell. Jean (Monmouth)

Totally agree with cranberry juice or caplets, lots of water, tea is also an excellent diuretic, so is canteloupe if available.
One thing I haven't seen mentioned is bath additives - esp bubble bath products - can really trigger a UTI. Baking soda or ground oats, added to your warm bath water can be very soothing. Mind you, you'll smell like a bowl of porridge when you emerge from an oatmeal bath!!

buckets of cranberry juice *scrunches face up* cut with aspartame free lemonade. just about makes it barable for me...course they didn't have the cranberry pills when I had it. Didn't know it worked on acid though, maybe I'll try some for my tummy.

Feel better soon, Caz ~~~~~~~ up park road

Hello there Caz!

My consultant told me plenty of water, ie, more than two litres per day.

Plus cranberry juice daily.

Plus a shot of coffee or a beer/wine as well when you are in crisis - as they are diuretics they will push a huge volume of water through your bladder.

You will wee for England but very quickly be symptom free - it's like a massive flush out.

Hope you are feeling more comfortable soon!

Didn't have the burning, thankfully! You have to avoid anything acidic so careful if you drink squashes, also some of them have aspartame in which isn't good for us, I am sure that is what sparked my fm off.
Tracey, have had the camera malarkey when I had a kidney stone a few years ago! Not nice, can't remember if I had the dye through, maybe I did!
All was well then, little stone like a grain of rice had disappeared.

Cranbery juice neutralises the acid in your wee so helps stop the burning

Tracey Report 28 Jan 2008 07:04

I've suffered with this over the last few months - thankfully not had it since October.I get antibiotics from the doctor but in January had to go for a cysoscopy (the camera into the bladder) and an Intravenous Urogram (the dye through the kidneys). The results for the first were okay, still waiting for results for the second.
I just try drinking as much water as i can, like you i also have an actimel every day and also have cranberry capsules. I don't know what else i can do to prevent it!! I just think some people are more prone to it than others.
Hope you get it sorted and feel better soon.

Tracey xx

Hi Caz. I have the actimel too, they are brill.

I have just had a uti, I rang my doc for something else she is sorting for me and said I was in and out the loo, managing only dribbles, luckily no burning altho had taken a couple of sachets of cystitus crystals as keep some ready. She sent me a prescription for antibiotics so have finished those now, a week's supply and finally seem ok. Have been drinking lots of water and will go to H & B tomorrow to get Cranberry capsules, much better than the drinks as they are mostly water anyway. I did start to get a sore mouth due to taking antibiotics before Christmas for my bad throat infection and then this lot, so probably thrush. I ate a plain probiotic yogourt Saturday night, holding the yog. in my mouth as long as poss before swallowing and that seems to have worked too, mouth not so sore now.
Hope you can get the doc to give you something but best be careful and only take proper crystals or antibiotics.
Probably the stress and feeling down hasn't helped.
Take care, get well soon,
Lizx

You can take the capsules for as long as you want as they help keep all the waterworks healthy and do other bits too. lol

sympathise with you as I get it a lot and was in hospital when I was about 5 as I had it so often from the age of about one.

cranberry juice is good and ws told to dilute it with lemonade

What I find helps when I have it is plenty of really milky tea, doesnt cure it just the warmth of it going in one end helps as its burning comeing out the other.

And I try noe to even get off the loo just wrap duvet round me and just let it come out as it wants, if that makes sense mind you must look a sight lol

Thanks Janet, its great to get good advice and Marion, never knew that about the helicobactor, will get it for us both. Graeme seems better after triple treatment but I know its a stubborn virus. We need to look at prevention.

If you have any squash in the house see if you have one with sodium citrate as an ingredient. Thats what the sachets from the chemist contain.
