Well, here is his birth which will give you his parents - struggling with census before 1881 though. |

Nice detective work there Jonesey! I do think the James & Ann found above are likely to be his parents but if it were me I'd still get that birth cert. |

Hi thank you all for helping, you can see the problem i'm having .My second cousin told me tom Ruttley was born in cullompton Devon in 1854 but everything else Ive found out about him has him born in CliftonBristol in 1853.Along with the fact that he married his first wife Susan Riddle in Devon ,and his father's name wasJames , I thought maybe his family was from Cullompton. I just found the census entry for 1851 and it's interesting to note that tom's first daughter was also named anna.Vera's reference to the nephew sounds hopeful.I knew about the 1911 census which is correct .my grandmother is Stella.Apparently they appear as Rattley in 1901.Looks like you've cracked it for me .You are all wonderful. THANK YOU |

Did some arithmetic and it looks like Hannah bornin1856 on 1861 census became Anna by 1881 census So Anna 8 months in1851 census must have died in 1853. Did anyone find them on the 1871 census , I am having no luck |

Thanks ,that's interesting , I'll look into that because in in 1891 she was also a domestic servant along with her sister ? Elizabeth.from the 1881 census. I think its a bit far fetched for Ann to have given birth at 47.I'm thinking Hanna(Anna) is the unmarried mother |
