Find Ancestors

My research into my family name line ends at my GG Grandfather William Howard c1842, Northamptonshire. Can anyone help? He is listed on the 1871 census but I cannot find him in 1851 and 61. Also I haven't got a birth certificate for him as I can find no certain reference on FreeBMD. He was living in Sheffield in 1871 and gave his birthplace as Crawford (Cranford?), Northamptonshire. He was a shoemaker and was married to Emma Wright in 1863 in Northampton. His fathers name was John Howard a labourer. The address he gave on the marriage certificate was Scarletwell St, Northampton. He died in Sheffield in 1879. That is everthing I have on him. All help and suggestions welcome. Thanks, John

Looks like it says 'natural' to me, a term usually used for illegitimate kids! May be the enumerator queried how a 26 year old head could have a 14 year old kiddie? BTW freebmd is not complete, you can always check on ancestry full bmd index though it is not name searchable with the same ease as the brilliant freebmd

On his marriage cert, his father is listed as John Howard, labourer. Why would his father be called Howard if that was his mothers name unless they were married? Could he just be working away from home in 1841? John.

It is possible his father could be working away from home. You would need one of the childrens birth certificate to see if a father is mentioned. Fiona.
