hitting a brick wall can you help. Clara or Clarina Lauger born about 1837 moved to Liverpool England. no records before 1871 census when she was married to a Benjamin Henry Haynes from Canada, their childrens birth certificates give the name Lauger. Any ideas of where I can get information? Thanks Gwen

Aargh. Ancestry has them transcribed as Haymes, and has called their servant his sister ...

A couple of interesting if not clearly related people:

1891 census, England:

Name: Clara Langer
Age: 36
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1855
Relation: Servant
Gender: Female
Where born: Saxony (Kingdom State), Dresdon

Civil Parish: St Lawrence
Ecclesiastical parish: St Lawrence
Town: Reading
County/Island: Berkshire
Country: England

Registration district: Reading
Sub-registration district: St Giles

-- the image is terrible, but I'd say it at least equally probably says Lauger.

1851 census, Canada:

Name: Benjamin Heyne
Gender: Male
Age: 8
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1844
BIRTHPLACE: E India
Province: Canada West (Ontario)
District: Middlesex County
District Number: 23
Sub-District: Delaware
Sub-District Number: 221
Page: 19
Line: 16
Roll: C_11738
Schedule: A

-- father Benjamin Heyne, born East Indias, 1806; older brother Charles, born England, 1842; mother Elisa, born East Indias, 1820.

There are three Benjamin Haynes-s who may have married an Elizabeth or Eliza in England between 1837 and 1843 -- but they more likely married abroad.

That Benjamin in Canada in 1851/2 looks like a good candidate. Unfortunately, the next census here was in 1871. But that's okay; here's that Benjamin Sr. in England in 1871:

Name: Benjamin Heyne
Age: 64
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1807
Relation: Head
Gender: Male
Where born: East Indies, Bengton

Civil Parish: St James
Town: Taunton
County/Island: Somerset
Country: England

Registration district: Taunton
Sub-registration district: Taunton St James
ED, institution, or vessel: 1
Household schedule number: 15

Benjamin Heyne 64
Eliza Heyne 24 (she is Elisa, 6, in 1852 in Canada)
Emma O Heyne 14
Hannah Shattock 21
Susan Tildesley 50

Benjamin Jr. is not in Canada. So I dunno -- his age is off from the 1871 English census, but it seems like a good match otherwise. I don't find any other Benjamin Heyn* Hayn* born 1837-1847 in England who matches.

I don't see anyone looking like Benjamin Jr. marrying in Ontario after 1857, which is what I thought might have happened.

But aha:

Name: Benjamin Heyne
Year of Registration: 1867
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Taunton (1837-1974)
County: Devon, Somerset
Volume: 5c
Page: 535

That could be yer pre-existing marriage. Potential brides:
Ann Lewes
Emma Oxenford

The 1871 children could in fact have been Clara's.

There are two other marriages in England that might be of interest, as possible family members:

Marriages Jun 1880
Halle Sarah London C. 1c 150
LAUGER Philip London C. 1c 150

Marriages Jun 1888
JOHNSON Edward Croydon 2a 459
Langer Wilhelmine Magdalena Croydon
Lauger Wilhelmine Magdalena Croydon
LEVY Mathias Croydon 2a 459
Watkins Cordelia Stanley Croydon 2a 459

Also, just go to FreeBMD and search for any Heyne/Heynes event, anytime anywhere, and scan the list. A Benjamin married in 1855 -- could have been Sr. remarrying.

Actually, do that for Lauger too. There are a lot of Prussian sounding names ;) -- you might be able to track some of them down in censuses and run across something having to do with Clara.

This looks like it's probably Benjamin Jr.'s birth:

Birth Date 18 - Jan
Birth Year 1844
Baptised Surname Heyne
Sex Male
LDS Film Reference None
IOR Reference None
Source Name East India Register
Source Year 1844
Source Edition 2
Source Presidency Bombay
Source Event Birth
Entry At Belgaum, the lady of Capt. B. Heyne, 16th Madras N.I., of a son.

Search for surname Heyne at www.fibis.org and browse around.

So there you have it, my theory of Benjamin.

As for Clara/Claria/Clarissa ... I'm no help. ;)

So Gwen ... any thoughts?

I have seen the 1871 Census entry but have not been able to trace a marriage between these two. Of course there is nothing to say that they were married but possibly if they were then the marriage took place in Canada or the States.
As far as Clara (Klara ?) is concerned her age shown on the 1871 does make it possible that she was married BEFORE Benjamin - she gave birth to her daughter when she was already 30 ! - and he was not so young either !!
Now, looking at the Lauger familes in Germany - many emigrated to the States. The fact that she is shown as "Born Germany" in 1871 does not mean that she was living here for umpteen years, she could well have been in the States and met Barber Benjamin if he crossed the Canada/U S border. On the 1881 he has dropped the Benjamin in favour of Henry and was then a Hairdresser with another two children ... Clara (Clarina) ... making up for list time ?
I think that you need a census for the States pre 1871 to find one, or both, these people OR the Marriage Certificate which would show the father of the bride.

Hi Joe -- I checked the 1860 US census (you can search without a subscription at Ancestry, you just can't see details).

Searched for

clar*
lauger langer laueger lauer
(langer because Ancestry so often mistranscribes "u" as "n" ... and vice versa)
born 1835-1839
in Prussia Germany

(also searched w/o any given name)

and don't see anything likely.

Clara Lauer city, Baltimore (Independent City), info 15 abt 1845 location gender

Clara Lauger city, Cook, info 2 abt 1858 location gender

Clara Langer city, Middlesex, info 1 abt 1859 location gender

Clara Lauer city, Schuylkill, info 6 abt 1854 location

In 1850:

Clara E Langer city, Essex, info abt 1842 location

Clarisa L Langer city, Essex, info abt 1817 location

No luck with the Heyne bunch either.
