hitting a brick wall can you help. Clara or Clarina Lauger born about 1837 moved to Liverpool England. no records before 1871 census when she was married to a Benjamin Henry Haynes from Canada, their childrens birth certificates give the name Lauger. Any ideas of where I can get information? Thanks Gwen

Aargh. Ancestry has them transcribed as Haymes, and has called their servant his sister ...

There are three Benjamin Haynes-s who may have married an Elizabeth or Eliza in England between 1837 and 1843 -- but they more likely married abroad.
That Benjamin in Canada in 1851/2 looks like a good candidate. Unfortunately, the next census here was in 1871. But that's okay; here's that Benjamin Sr. in England in 1871:

Benjamin Jr. is not in Canada. So I dunno -- his age is off from the 1871 English census, but it seems like a good match otherwise. I don't find any other Benjamin Heyn* Hayn* born 1837-1847 in England who matches.
I don't see anyone looking like Benjamin Jr. marrying in Ontario after 1857, which is what I thought might have happened.
But aha:

Also, just go to FreeBMD and search for any Heyne/Heynes event, anytime anywhere, and scan the list. A Benjamin married in 1855 -- could have been Sr. remarrying.
Actually, do that for Lauger too. There are a lot of Prussian sounding names ;) -- you might be able to track some of them down in censuses and run across something having to do with Clara.

I have seen the 1871 Census entry but have not been able to trace a marriage between these two. Of course there is nothing to say that they were married but possibly if they were then the marriage took place in Canada or the States.
As far as Clara (Klara ?) is concerned her age shown on the 1871 does make it possible that she was married BEFORE Benjamin - she gave birth to her daughter when she was already 30 ! - and he was not so young either !!
Now, looking at the Lauger familes in Germany - many emigrated to the States. The fact that she is shown as "Born Germany" in 1871 does not mean that she was living here for umpteen years, she could well have been in the States and met Barber Benjamin if he crossed the Canada/U S border. On the 1881 he has dropped the Benjamin in favour of Henry and was then a Hairdresser with another two children ... Clara (Clarina) ... making up for list time ?
I think that you need a census for the States pre 1871 to find one, or both, these people OR the Marriage Certificate which would show the father of the bride.

Hi Joe -- I checked the 1860 US census (you can search without a subscription at Ancestry, you just can't see details).
Searched for

(langer because Ancestry so often mistranscribes "u" as "n" ... and vice versa)
born 1835-1839
in Prussia Germany
(also searched w/o any given name)
and don't see anything likely.
