The name 'Pusey' means 'The isle of peas' and refers to a smal hamlet near Faringdon. Legend has it that William Pusey saved King Canute's life, and in gratitude the King gave him the right of cornage, i.e. all the land where a horn's blast could be heard from a fixed point. The horn is now in the V&A Museum. Pusey House has long gone out of family ownership. The 19th.c Edward Bouverie Pusey was born there, but in fact was not a true Pusey as his father, Philip Bouverie added the name when he inherited it from the last surviving Pusey, Jane.l
