From marriage records, it looks like Sandra might have remarried to Peter Crouch.

I cannot find a birth record for Vera Collins, but Kay found another tree with Keith Sendall on it. The father was Herbert and the mother Vera, although interestingly the certificate attached was for Marjorie.

Ok I caught up. I have emailed a few of you privately. I'm confused as to how Austin found a sister Marjorie.

I am certain that the Vera Collins born in Biddulph is correct as her father is a postman on the marriage certificate.

The census does not list a Marjorie at that time?

A remarriage would make sense and that would explain my father's adoption although that makes me terribly sad. Please could I kindly ask that those details are sent to me so I can add them to my tree and check before I start contacting people.

Also you have all been amazing. Truly I mean this as my family is small and bears the scars of this adoption and then adoptive parents dying when my father was 5. No one wanted him and he has become a bitter man.

I hope I can put some of this right. So please please send me the details and I can follow this all up. Austin - the Facebook names would be amazing. You are all far better at this than I am, juggling a teaching job and kids is hard!

So thank you, thank you, thank you.

Kay has just raised a good point via PM- could Sandra have been formally adopted by Herbert Sendall?

There are two marriages that are possible for Sandra- under the name Sendall.

Kay????

Kay- are you sure that Gladys was in Mitchell Street in 1939?

I don't have access to the 1939 but only seeing Neal and Robinson surnames listed there.

It looks like Gladys S Walker was at 18 Langton Gate in 1939.

AustinQ

I'm pretty certain the above Vera is correct. Looking at the births on Free BMD it looks like Vera was possibly with Herbert Sendall from 1949 even though they didn't marry until 1962. (two children- son born 1949 & daughter 1952 - the daughter's children are on Facebook).

So it seems possible from the above that Vera was in a relationship with her sister's husband from as early as 1949. Possibly a reason why the children from her marriage to Henry Alexander were adopted?

(Vera's sister, Marjorie Collins was born 6 November 1919- twin of Colin Collins)

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 25 Jul 2017 08:47

Just trying to grasp a few basics- Not seeing Vera & Henry on the electoral register. What address was given for the births of the children?

Electoral Register:- 18 Mitchell Street, Finsbury 1938:
Rebecca Haylett
William Haylett
Frances Neal
William George Neal
William John Neal
George Alexander Robinson
--------------------------------------

Not seeing Vera's death

Did Vera marry again? If so, do you have the certificate? Does it list her as widowed?

Marriage?:

Marriages Sep 1962
ALEXANDER Vera SENDALL Newcastle T. 1b 194
SENDALL Herbert K ALEXANDER Newcastle T. 1b 194
------------------------------------

Death:
Name: Vera Sendall
Birth Date: 14 Nov 1924
Date of Registration: Apr 2003
Age at Death: 78
Registration district: Croydon
Inferred County: London, Surrey
Register Number: C86B
District and Subdistrict: 225/1C
Entry Number: 35

EDIT: It looks likely that Herbert Sendall was previously married to Vera's sister Marjorie.

ArgyllGran Report 24 Jul 2017 23:35

https://www.forces-war-records.co.uk/units/4445/pioneer-corps/

Hardly known today is the fact that many thousands of Germans and Austrians joined the Pioneer Corps to assist the Allied war efforts and liberation of their home countries. These were mainly Jews and political opponents of the Nazi Regime who had fled to Britain while it was still possible, including the cinematographer Sir Ken Adam. These men - often dubbed "The King's Most Loyal Enemy Aliens" - later moved on to serve in fighting units like the Royal Fusiliers, Royal Tank Corps and even with the RAF. Serving as German nationals in the British forces was particularly dangerous, since, in the case of them being taken captive, there was a high probability they would have been executed as traitors by the Germans. Also, the number of German-born Jews joining the British forces was exceptionally high. Until the end of the war, one of seven Jewish refugees from Germany had joined the British forces. Their profound knowledge of the German language and customs proved to be very useful. A lot of them served in the administrative bodies of the British occupation army in Germany after the war

18 Mitchell Street EC1 - I have searched some electoral roles. But no joy with this address to add. More experienced researchers might be able to though than me.

Rambling

Rambling Report 24 Jul 2017 23:10

BTW you said you haven't looked at electoral rolls, that is why people are asking for the address so that they can look, London electoral rolls prior to and after the war are on Ancestry, even if the name is not on there for that address it 'might' give further clues

Rambling

Rambling Report 24 Jul 2017 23:06

Deborah it really might help if you gave the address you have, regardless of whether it was destroyed during the war.

I take your point about Jewish migrants changing names, but that's not certain is it?
