Perhaps those births are from this marriage:

I don't see a marriage of a Williams to Sarah May in Plymouth. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the relationships?

The Frearson/Griffiths births are in Wycombe, Bucks, and Watford, Herts. - for whatever that's worth. Ernest doesn't seem to have been in either place at that time - but maybe Ruth was.

Googling Odstone Farm, Ashbury produces two places of the same name, one in Oxfordshire, and one in Swindon. This seems to be the Swindon one, per this link re Ernest's brother:

He's at that address also in various years until 1946.

It's a pity it's just a phone book entry, and not an ER to see who's with him.

I can't see a connection but putting this here so someone else can look

There are two Frearson births mmn Griffiths in 1934 & 1937, I can't see a marriage but may have missed it. probably no connection but thought as the names cropped up it was worth a look.

There are a few references to Justice Charles remarks- but I can't see any that give further details of the case:

Yorkshire Evening Post - Monday 15 March 1943

THE INDISPENSABLES
Before sentencing a woman aircraft Inspector at Oxford Assizes to three months for bigamy, to-day, Mr. Justice Charles was told she was on important national work. The Judge commented, " It amuses me how many of these people come before me. A man who is possibly a valet soon becomes an inspector at a wage of seven eight pounds week. Since the war, I have never come across the prisoner engaged on national work who is not indispensable. As soon as you commit a crime, you become indispensable."

Justice Charles' remarks also mentioned in Staffordshire Advertiser - Saturday 03 April 1943

AustinQ Report 16 Aug 2017 16:28

The article:

Manchester Evening News - Monday 15 March 1943

JUDGE ON 'INDESPENSABLE' WAR WORKERS

When Counsel at Oxford Assizes today pleaded for a woman aircraft inspector who was charged with bigamy, and, who he said, was engaged in important national work. Mr Justice Charles remarked 'It amuses me how many of these people come before me. A man who is possibly a valet, soon becomes an inspector at a wage of £7 or £8 a week. Since the war I have never come across the prisoner engaged on national work is not indispensable. As soon as you commit a crime you become indispensable' The woman, Ruth Cunningham (30) of Foxhill Road, Reading was sentenced to three months for bigamy, the judge remarking that bigamy is so common it is impossible to overlook it.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 16 Aug 2017 16:18

Fab Kay!

OK- so the bigamy could be the Frearson marriage? So perhaps Ruth never divorced? Or maybe married again after Frearson? A shame the article doesn't list the husband.

AG- that's why I was asking, I've already looked and can't be sure- Paulette said Ruth's father died aged 56.

I wanted to know if the family stayed in the Devon area.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 16 Aug 2017 14:28

Need to do a little more digging, but just putting this up so I can remember where I am:

According to the 1939 register her name change (whether by deedpole or marriage) was registered in Middlesex 1954, so it's likely Ruth was in the Middlesex area at this time.

Possible:
1945- 1948 electoral registers- Ruth Cunningham living at 31 Celia Crescent, Staines, Spelthorne
-----------------------------------

Then in 1951 this Ruth Griffiths pops up

EDIT: Possibly not our Ruth- there is a Bert Griffiths marriage to Ruth Gllagher in 1950 Northumberland, and a birth of a possible child to this marriage in Middlesex.

1951- 1964 electoral registers- Ruth Griffiths living 534 Staines Road, Spelthorne with Bert Griffiths

1965 electoral registers- Ruth Griffiths living at 12a Stewart Avenue with Bert Griffiths

1968- Bert listed in phonebook- 12a Stewart Ave, Shepperton, Chertsey
----------------------------

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 16 Aug 2017 13:49

If they married in Devon, there are only two possibles 1900-12:

Marriages Sep 1903 (>99%)
May Hannah Plymouth 5b 633
Williams Joseph Plymouth 5b 633
(Possibly living in Flintshire in 1911, but both also born there, so maybe not. Also wouldn't fit with Ruth's birth Devonport 1912))

Marriages Jun 1903 (>99%)
May Annie Louisa Plymouth 5b 624
Williams William James Plymouth 5b 624

(Living in Plymouth 1911)

There are a few possible marriages elsewhere, but not many.

I've had a busy morning. I've only just got on the computer!

Paulette- do you know the names of Ruth's parents?

Paulette

Paulette Report 15 Aug 2017 19:28

I don't have any information on the will you cannot look it up you have to buy it. I will continue searching. Don't have the certificate for Sarah E Griffiths as yet. Thank you your help.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 15 Aug 2017 19:17

I wonder if this is Sarah E in 1939 register? YOB wrong, but place right.
If so, she's not Ruth's child:

Baby (Sarah Elizabeth) Griffiths (Morris) 1937 Newcastle Emlyn R.D. Carmarthenshire

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 15 Aug 2017 19:12

No, but it could be her own child?

Difficult to know without the certificate details- although my feeling at the moment is that it's not related (the Griffiths surname wasn't added to the 1939 register until 1954 Middlesex) .

I'm still curious about the Kathleen Cunningham birth.

I'll should be around tomorrow, I'll have another little dig then.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 15 Aug 2017 19:08

On thinking more about it -

if Sarah's birth was registered in Carmarthen in 1936, she can't be the child referred to in the 1933 court case.

But she could be the child in the photo.

Confused? I certainly am.
