Please can someone tell me if it is possible to find out if someone has died within the last four years?

Assuming UK? You may find an announcement on https://www.iannounce.co.uk/

or a probate record https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills

also worth googling the name in case it appears in a local newspaper etc.

otherwise you could trawl through the microfiche at one of the main libraries that hold the register up to date ( by about 3 months) ..eg Birmingham, Manchester... can't find the list atm.

Online searches for obituaries are a good idea. I just 2 minutes ago found a couple relating to another search in this forum.

For that purpose, remember to search for "Smith John" rather than "John Smith", too, as that is how names are published in obituaries (and how I found the two in question, both after 2010). It also saves multiple searches with and without middle names, although they can be useful to narrow results in cases like John Smith. :-)

I think this may be the list Nyx was referring to -- I had FreeBMD's page for a registry district open, and clicked through and got here:

Oops no, Nyx said libraries. But will local registry offices do searches within a specific time period? I'm not sure.
