a tree on ancestry has only traced him as far as 1936

He wasn't a WW2 casualty. At least he is listed on the CWGC site

Maybe he went overseas and decided to stay

Yes sorry Lewis William LAUDER did live in Australia. He could have changed his surname to Weir when he married for the 3rd time.

I don't see his death in Scotland, either as Lauder or as Weir.

Of course, maybe he changed his first name(s) as well.
