Your mother must have been under 21 then, or her father couldn’t have stopped her from marrying your father

Thank you for that. Unfortunately her brother was away at college and her sister was much younger so kept out of everything. I knew it was a long shot, just thought the date and place/name might ring a bell with someone. Should have said my mother worked at the boys school but I'll try contacting them

Unless the school has any old staff records, or your mother remembers his surname, I fear you have no hope of finding him.

Does your mother have any siblings who might know, if she had spoken to them about him at the time?

Bit of a long shot this! I'm trying to find info on my birth father, problem is all I know about him is Christian name and occupation. I was born in '65 and placed for adoption. My mothers name was Linda/Lynn and I have been in contact with her for several years however she has blanked alot of stuff (understandably) and all she can tell me is that my fathers name was David and he was a carpenter/joiner working at Crediton school. They dated for a while and when she found she was pregnant he offered to marry her but my grandfather refused. It would.just be nice to fill in the missing pieces :-)
