I have a photo of my father in a M.G.C. machine gun corp uniform dated around c1920.
I have been told he was in the Cavalry Regiment and he also told me he rode a horse, would this be to draw the gun carriage, and also he was posted to INDIA would this be during the war or after?
I have no regiment or enlisting details
His name George William Ryan
Born 29 August 1901 in Chatham/ Strood, Kent
He might have enlisted under age ,as I am told he left home aged 16yrs.
His fathers name George Herbert Ryan
Mothers maiden name Rose Hannah Hall.

You could have a look on this site. They do have a forum where people may be able to answer your specific query about the MGC
http://www.1914-1918.net/

To be honest, I had looked for any medal or service record on Ancestry but couldn't find anything relevant. Over 60% of service records were destroyed in WW2 bombing.

Try seeing if he is listed on the National Archive
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person%5Cdefault.htm

If he'd stayed on in the Army after 1920, his records will still be with the MOD.
This is the link for obtaining UK service records:

Have a look at the thread posted at the top of this board - there are other links which might be helpful

Check out http://www.1914-1918.net/whatcavreg.htm
The MGC was formed in Oct 1915, and the regimental MG sections were moved into the MGC over the next 8 months as their loss at the regimental level was made up by the issue of Lewis LMGs. The MGC was disbanded in 1922.

My guess is that he wouldn't be posted to India during WW1, but only post war.

Soldiers who continued in the army after WW1 had their service records stored separately from the records that got burned in WW2, and are effectively treated much like WW2 records re access.
