Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me please? I'm new to this research lark and am having a bit of trouble pinning down one of my relations - George E Cochrane, born c 1812 in Middlesex.

He married a Louisa Roberts in Lewisham in q1 1857

Occupation in 1871 census - Sales Assistant / Secretary to Military Depot - India Office - ret'd on pension

He doesn't appear in the 1851 census, and I am wondering whether he would have served abroad with the India Office? Would this be a military post? Given his pension status, I'm hoping to track down his records. Can anyone suggest where I could obtain them, please?

With kind regards, Mervyn Cochrane.

Looks like this could be him (from FindMyPast)

East India Register & Army List 1855
First name(s) Geo E
Last name Cochrane
Year 1855
Service Home Establishment
Record collection Colonial service

The only information on the actual record (just a list of names) is that he was a clerk in the Military department.

What was his occupation when he married?
