Thanks Gritty, I am indebted to you. I was on the way there having found the record on Findmypast which gave his birth as 1891 in Old Brompton, Chatham, Kent. That branch of my family will be delighted. When they asked me to help they knew Lilian Silvie had been married twice but had no idea to whom as the boys were brought up with the surname of their stepfather.

Many thanks to all who have helped me.

Sue

O.k. Thanks for that Gritty.

I thought I was missing something - which doesn't take much these days, lol.

I think Susan means the one that mgnv found, is the one that died in 1918- which is not hers.

The military record for him on FMP states he was born Old Brompton, Chatham, and was a fishmonger on enlistment.

Susan

I don't understand what you are saying. You say you have found him and he is the one who died of wounds in 1918, but earlier you said he married for a second time in 1926? This must be two different people surely.

However, http://www.1901censusonline.com/ doesn't give the occup Chas names 16 y later:

Name Age Where born Administrative county Civil parish Occupation
Joseph Barrett 46 Berks Lilly Catmore Berks Catmore Entire Ordinary Agricultural Labourer

Maybe I should have tried 1891 or allowed variant spellings of Barrett.

How often does it happen that one asks for help and things seem to happen? I have looked at Findmypast many times while looking for this man and decided this evening to have one more try!! There is the record of his army service starting in 1909 and completing 21 years in 1930. He re-engaged in 1919 and joined the Tank Corps. That is probably how he met his second wife who he married at Wareham in 1926. I still don't know where he was born but he joined up in Old Brompton, Chatham, Kent so that seems a good place to start.

Many thanks for all your replies. Kathleen has the marriages right and MarieCeleste thanks for the link. I am absolutely useless when it comes to National Archives and just go round and round getting cross. Something to do with age I suspect.
I have looked at Medal Rolls without much luck. There are so many Charles Barretts. The only one I have found with a father Joseph was born in Berkshire and killed in 1918.

The marriage that Kathleen posted would fit with the divorce on this link:

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C8039553

Susan, if you're able to go to Kew you could look at the divorce record there. Otherwise you can request a quotation to have the record copied and sent to you. There may just be some clues.

I am looking for the above soldier. All I know about him is from the record of his marriage in April 1917 when he gave his age as 28, his rank or profession as soldier, his residence as 2 Cadet Battalion Machine gun Corps, Pirbright and his father's name as Joseph Barrett, fitter's mate. When his first child was born his occupation was given as Sergeant in the 6th Rifle Brigade.
When his wife remarried in 1927 it was stated that she had obtained a divorce from Charles Barrett. I don't know where or when he was born and cannot find his military records.
