Charles Cooper was my great great grandfather. I know that he was born around 1845 - could be a year either side and that he died in either 1900 or 1901. When he married my great great grandmother in May 1880 his occupation is given as soldier and his address as St Boltophs, Colchester. My research has shown children born in 1883 in Aldershot, in 1884 in Portland and then in Essex. The pattern seems to have been that children were born almost annually except between 1884 -1887, then 1889 - 1893 and finally between 1893 -1900. This could mean he was away on service. He is not included in the censuses of 1881, 1891 or 1901. I have spent hours trying to find any details of his regiment etc with no success. He is mentioned on his daughters marriage certificate in March 1901 where it says he was a musician and deceased. Can anyone help me here or point me in the right direction? Many thanks.

Welcome to the boards.

Do you know where he was born and what was the name of your great great grandmother?

I don't know where he was born There was some talk in the family years back that he may have come from Ireland but I have nothing definitive. My Great grandmothers name was Mary Maria Butler and she was only 16 when she married. She was born in Essex.

This looks like him then:-

Looking at the image it gives his wife's name as Mary Maria Butler, his children as Annie and Mary, his father as Charles and his sister as Anne. He was a Draper by trade when signing up.

He was married 10th May, 1880 in Essex

He was born Leatherlane, London

The cause of discharge was the termination of his second period of limited engagement.

There is quite a bit of other information about his service. Perhaps someone else with a subscription to Findmypast can send you the images (not sure I can do it) but if not I will get my son to do it for me tomorrow.
