help finding the right military number

Hi all

Can anyone help me confirm.the right military number please for my great grandfather

His name is REGINALD HERBERT PAINTER
He served with the Royal Hampshire Regiment I believe
His birthday is March 7th 1918 in Southampton

I currently have 2 numbers
5498887 and 5408887

Any help appreciated!

Thank you! I knew he was a POW and he managed to escape but had contradicting number.
I think I need to order his military records :-)
