During the American Civil War it was possible for a person to pay a set amount of money to hire another person to fulfill his military draft obligations. Does anyone know if there are any surviving lists matching substitute and the sponsor of the substitution?

As far as I can tell (using Google) such records as there are will be in the American Archives. This link tells you quite a bit about them and is quite interesting even if it doesn't help you personally.
