No- it's the from the birth index on the GRO- they now give mother's maiden names prior to 1911.

So it means his actual birth (as recorded on his birth certificate) was 1877

Are you sure you have the details correct? There is this one with mother's maiden name Hulme- but he was born 1877

CROOK, WILLIAM HENRY (Mother's maiden name: HULME)
GRO Reference: 1877 D Quarter in CHORLTON Volume 08C Page 755

Perhaps the parents forgot when he was born?!

Awww no way :( ...am sorry to say , its the wrong one Kathleen
I saw this one with spouse Isabella. they are on the 1911 census (but not mine sorry)..My William is with his mother mary crook (nee Hulme) and uncle Richard crook.His father josiah did a runner two decades ago...
He is good at hideing

His army record is on Findmypast but I can't remember how to save them and forward them to you. If no one else gets them for you I will get my son to do it for you when he comes in later tonight.

I imagine it is the correct person as his wife is Isabella Greenhalgh.

EDIT - have now sent the images of the service record.
