There's probably a REME Group on Face Book and maybe a 1 Station Workshop REME as well so why not try there?

Have you thought of contacting the REME museum?
http://www.rememuseum.org.uk/

The REME Association does have an online presence. Try there?

It would help if you could upload the photo to their page on Facebook

Although your uncle served after WW2, there are similar posts on this site

As a point of interest - although you knew of him as Ray or Raymond, was he in fact John Raymond Coates?

My uncle was stationed with the REME in Malaya between 1953 and 1955, and I have a picture of him and his team mates in a tug-o-war competition which they won. The picture is headed No.1 Station Workshop REME, Taiping District and Taping Garrison, Malaya 1953.
I would love to find anyone else named on the picture, or even better anyone who knew my uncle.
Unfortunately, he was killed on his 24th birthday in a motorcycle accident only 6 weeks after returning home from Malaya, so I never knew him...
