If the focus is purely on Leslie's military service, it looks as if Ben is going to have to apply for his records.

I suspect his birth is the 1922 Edmonton birth. - Parents were Joseph Payne and Florence Emma Rose.

Leslie is with his parents on the electoral register in Edmonton in 1946. In 1947 he's still in Edmonton (at a different address) with his wife Ethel.

This is Joseph & family in 1939 (Leslie is likely to be the closed record):

5 Gordon Road , Enfield U.D., Middlesex, England
Joseph Payne 12 Oct 1880 Male General Labourer (Pavior) Married
Florence E Payne 17 Feb 1885 Female Unpaid Domestic Duties Married
William J Payne 05 May 1915 Male General Labourer (Pavior) Single
Sorry, this record is officially closed.

However, none of this helps with the original question!

Did you mention Dartford at one point? If he lived there in his formative years, might this be his birth?

Births Dec 1922 (>99%)
Payne Leslie A Starmer Leicester 7a 310

Without a known middle name, it’s a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Please, give us ALL of the facts that you’ve gleaned from the headstone &, if you know it, the names of any spouse or children. We might be able to work back from that.

Unfortunately, Ben, you didn’t give his year of birth. As the death records aren’t online, we can’t look it up for ourselves.
His recent death also means that there’s a chance his entry on the 1939 register might be closed. That’s assuming that he hadn’t already been conscripted.

If you’re related, you could apply for a copy of his service records which would still be with the MOD. However, from what others have said, seamen’s Records are frequently given to the men when they are discharged. There would still be some paperwork, but it wouldn’t be complete.

This is the link for obtaining UK service records which cost £30.
