I'm not questioning that the Bolton birth is the correct one.
Maybe the 1901 enumerator assumed she was born in America because Harry was. Or maybe she wanted to sound more exotic!

Looking into Henry Andrew Gardiner Coyne, the librettist 1839-1900.
probably Bertha's husband, although a good bit older than her:

Presumably he couldn't marry Bertha before Gustavus's birth because he was still married to Phoebe.

His death, after (or maybe before) which Bertha moved in with George Leslie:

Bertha may have said she was born in America, but I still feel the birth I posted previously for her is the right one...

Apologies if the 1939 register for widow Ella and son has already been posted. Note the address, 9 Springfield Place, was bertha's address on the probate record Argyllgran posted:

I'm not sure Bertha was ever actually married to George Leslie - maybe for religious reasons? She was RC, he was C of E.

I don't see a marriage record, anyway.

1901 census -
Bertha's birthplace is given as America - and also her son Harry is said to be born in America.

Son Harry is with his father Henry G in 1891 - but no sign of Gustavus:

Harry Coyne

Name: Harry Coyne

Hi Christine, we may have crossed in the post. See my link to his parents' performances in Tenby in my post before your last one.

Just took a quick look at newspapers on FMP, lots of refs esp to MR G-C, and references to him being Irish.

Edit: The Era 29 February 1896 shows Gustavus as a 'young comedian'

Christine in Yorkshire

Christine in Yorkshire Report 29 Nov 2018 21:20

OOh maybe not Kucinta as I have found Ella Dale on the 1901 census and she was a professional musician and her father was a professional vocalist - there may well be a connection as to how they met.
Thank you I will follow that through :-)

Kucinta Report 29 Nov 2018 21:19

The parents were in Wales in 1884. The Tenby Observer Weekly List of Visitors and Directory 27th November 1884 has MR And Mrs Gardiner Coyne appearing at the public Hall. Miss Bertha Fletcher ( Mrs G Coyne) is the heroine. Mr Gardiner Coyne plays her foster brother with the 'true hearted Hiberrian ring which has justly stamped him as one of the famous Irish actors of the day'.

There is quite a lengthy account of their various performances:

Probably a co-incidence, but googling Henry Andrew Coyne-Gardiner comes up with a
librettist:

Henry Andrew Gardiner Coyne (October 1839 — 7 April 1900)
