There's quite a lot on Google including the fact that there was a typhus epidemic in 1846/7, in which thousands died.

Maybe you could find out whether he was in the Navy.

A search on Google shows surveys were going on around that time.

I have found a graveyard memorial in Cornwall to James Husband ROGERS b 1822 that says he died in Hong Kong on 26 November 1846.
Any suggestions where I might look to establish whether this was due to a military conflict please?
