Thanks for this, I didn't know what the numbers for the rank were. On that basis he was unusual, especially as he was only a farm labourer before he joined up. Mind you it seems he was discharged with a chronic cough and rheumatics in his mid forties, but at least he survived the Peninsular War. |

There is only one RSM so he did well. There are several who get as far as warrant office and the best of those gets to be the RSM for his troop. |

I have just found that an ancestor served in the 3rd Dragoon Guards 1804-1833. He rose through the ranks to Troop Sergeant Major. My research has established that this was the senior NCO post. My question is, was such a progression through the ranks unusual or not? |
