Have a read of this Sandra. Records of anyone serving more recently than WW1 are not online. If you fit the criteria then you'll be able to send for the documents.

Looking for information about Thomas James Pennell. He was born on 25/08/1913 he died the last quarter of the year in 1986. I think he joined the Kingsown Scottish Borderers, service no. 3.193.783. Think he enrolled with them to get a service number. Which I think was known as the desert rats. Any information I would be very grateful. I have 2 photos of him in uniform but not sure if I can add them. Thank you for any help.
