Thanks everyone for your replies and efforts on my behalf. I have been researching this relative for years but after obtaining a copy of the marriage certificate I came to a dead end.

I'd spotted the crossed out "married" and corrected to "single" in the 1911 census that Erika mentioned and wondered if George was missing presumed dead or otherwise unaccounted for. Maybe that explains why Paulina had to wait a number of years before she could remarry.

One other piece of information I found was the names of the witnesses to the marriage; Eleanor Mary Pass and Frederick Pass. I wondered if they might have been neighbours and I was able to find them in the 1901 census, living next door to a family called Taylor. The head of this family was Martha Taylor, a widow, so I checked the 1891 census only to find that her husband was called James rather than Joseph - how frustrating!

A tree on Ancestry says he died in Sept 1919 in East Retford district. There is NO record to substantiate this claim

Unless this is it...................

I tend to agree with ErikaH and ArgyllGran. My first thought was that they must have had to wait for one or other of their previous partners to pass away before they could marry.

It sounds as if maybe the marriage broke up, and she invented the heroic death rather than admit it.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 13 Jun 2020 11:25

One would have expected the wife to be informed if her husband had been killed in action, but she said in 1911 'married', then crossed it out and put 'single'.

Had she been free to marry as early as 1902 (when the Boer War ended), one wonders why she waited until 1919, having had a number of illegitimate children.

KathleenBell Report 13 Jun 2020 10:42

I wonder if this could be George's father in 1871:-

1871 England, Wales & Scotland Census
Beck Row, Clarborough, East Retford, Nottinghamshire, England

First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Sex Age Birth year Occupation Birth place

Joseph Taylor Head - Male 63 1808 - Nottinghamshire, England
Hannah Taylor Wife - Female 57 1814 - Nottinghamshire, England
Joseph Taylor Son - Male 22 1849 - Nottinghamshire, England<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
George Taylor Son - Male 17 1854 - Nottinghamshire, England
Henry Taylor Son - Male 12 1859 - Nottinghamshire, England

This Joseph is a labourer and seems to be born in the right sort of place. He had brothers called George and Henry so he could have named any children he had after his brothers.

Paulina in 1911 as housekeeper for Samuel Blower (Paulina is given as single but it had said married but this is crossed out and single written above):-

1911 Census For England & Wales
16 Crown Terrace Worksop, Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England

First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Sex Age Birth year Occupation Birth place

Samuel Blower Head Widower Male 34 1877 Colliery Labourer Below Ground Notts Worksop
Paulina Porter Taylor Servant Single Female 30 1881 House Keeper Domestic Notts Retford<<<<<<<<<<<
William H Taylor Boarder - Male 12 1899 School Notts Retford<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Tom Walter Blower Taylor Boarder - Male 7 1904 School Notts Worksop
Enoch Austin Blower Taylor Boarder - Male 3 1908 - Notts Worksop
Daisy Blower Taylor Boarder - Female 0 1911 - Notts Worksop
Mary Jane Hutchinson Boarder Married Female 51 1860 - Derby Derby
William H Withworth Visitor Single Male 35 1876 General Labourer Notts Sutton on Trent
Henry Longmate Boarder Widower Male 75 1836 Malster Notts Sutton on Trent

Three of the children have Blower as middle name and then Taylor as a surname so it looks as if Paulina and Samuel were a couple for quite a few years before they married.

Paulina in the 1901 census with her son:-

1901 England, Wales & Scotland Census
(George Inn Yard), 28, Moorgate, Retford, North Retford, East Retford, Nottinghamshire, England

First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Sex Age Birth year Occupation Birth place

Paulina Taylor Head Married Female 20 1881 - Retford, Nottinghamshire, England
William Hy Taylor Son Single Male 2 1899 - Retford, Nottinghamshire, England

Perhaps Paulina's husband was in the Boer war and over in South Africa in 1901. I know my own grandfather was.

David Report 12 Jun 2020 21:08

Thanks very much for your reply Erika. The information I have from the marriage certificate is that George was a Moulder and his address was Spital Hill, Clarborough. They were married at St Saviours church, also at Clarborough. His father, Joseph, was a Labourer.

George's son, William Henry was my Grandfather and his son, also William Henry, is my uncle. My uncle is convinced that George William's name was really William Henry. He thinks the name was handed down. My mother was still in contact with Paulina until her death in 1970. Paulina remarried twice, first to Samuel Blower in 1919 and then to Ernest Sturgess in 1942 after Samuel passed away in 1941.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 12 Jun 2020 19:15

The marriage was 5 July 1897.

His SON was William Henry

Paulina re-married in 1919

ErikaH Report 12 Jun 2020 19:13

Pre - WW1 would be the Boer War

Have you found him on the 1901 census.?

What was his father’s occupation?

And George’s address when he married

David

David Report 12 Jun 2020 17:31

Can anyone help me find information on my great grandfather, George William Taylor.

I know that he lived in Retford, Nottinghamshire and that he married Paulina Porter Hutchinson in 1897. His age provided on his marriage certificate was 24 so he was born around 1873. His father's name, again from his marriage certificate, was Joseph.

An uncle told me that he joined the army, possibly the Sherwood Foresters or the Sherwood Rangers and was killed in a war, which was before the First World War. To compound the problem, my uncle insists that his name was William Henry Taylor rather than George William Taylor as shown on his marriage certificate.

Thanks in advance,
David
