There's a record for a John Anthony Simpson in 1944 on HMS "Quorn".
He was an Engine Room Artificer 4th class; Service No P/MX 53778

The ship was deployed in the English Channel in June/July1944.
She was sunk on 3rd August, and that John Anthony Simpson was among those who died.

That man would only have been 14 in 1939.
If he was in the forces, it must have been towards the end of WW2. (Which 1944 certainly is.)

WW2 forces records are, for the most part, not online.

Unfortunately, either version of his name is a very common one - and he may be listed only as John or as Anthony in whatever online military records there are.

Looking at www.forces-war-records.co.uk -
there are a number of men listed as A J Simpson


Assuming the man you're interested in was born in England or Wales, there are only two possible births in approx the 1914-24 timeframe you suggest:

SIMPSON, JOHN ANTHONY WATSON

SIMPSON, ANTHONY JOHN

There was no child named John Ant(h)ony Simpson, or Ant(h)ony John Simpson born in Scotland in that time.
