Find Ancestors

My ggrandfather, David Hatelie, was born in Montreal but came over to England at some point and married in Devonport.

I've just found his naval history at The National Archives which states he died at sea on 26 Dec 1904. i have looked in the death indexes for the end of 1904 and the first half of 1905 but can't find him.

Does anyone know if he would have been buried at sea or been brought back to England, the ship was returning to England seemingly.

Also I can't find his birth anywhere. I have his census records in England and have sent for his M/C but can't find a record of his birth in Montreal on 22nd Aug 1863.

Can anyone help me please?

hi, if you have been looking in our deaths ie;ancestry , i doubt its in there.

Following the Merchant Shipping Act 1854, registers of births, marriages and deaths are recorded using information from ships´ official logs in Registrar-General´s series BT 158. From 1854 to 1883, births, marriages and deaths are recorded, just births and deaths from 1883 to 1887, and deaths only from 1888 to 1890. There is also a register of births of British Nationals at sea from 1875 to 1891 in BT 160, and deaths of British Nationals at sea from 1875 to 1888 in BT 159. Registers of births, marriages and deaths at sea from 1891 to 1972 are in BT 334.

it is an unusual name and I was surprised to find four people of that name all born in Scotland!!!

It is very unusual spelt that way Ann but you have no idea how difficult it is to find any records on him.

I have ancestry deluxe but can't find him in Canada at all. I have his naval records from 1885 through to 1904 and 1891 and 1901 census records. He married in 1885 and I am awaiting the certificate very impatiently. Hopefully his father's name will be on it and I will be able to connect him to the Scottish Hatelies. They're the only ones I can find as well.

Just a quick update on this. I have received the marriage certificate but it has just completely stumped me, more than I was , if that's possible.

David Hatelie, 21, was an Ass engineer, RN, living at Keyham Cottage, Stoke Damerel and his father was also David Hatelie, a Lieutenant Colonel.

Any idea where I could look for records? Have tried National Archives with no luck.

Thanks AoGG, but as far as I know none of these connect with them. According to census records, David was born in Montreal and the Scottish Hatelies appear to have gone to Canada where they were farmers! Nothing to do with the army at all and I have no idea if his father was Canadian or over in Canada with the army for whatever reason. I'm totally baffled.

Why not try getting hold of his dad's army? / marines? records. They'ld be handy to have anyway, and might shed some light on son David's childhood.

I reckon there is an alternative spelling for this surname and that's why we canlt find him

mgnv I have no idea where to get his records from. I don't know if he was army or navy or what regiment. Any ideas?

Aogg I did consider these Hatelys but David would have been pretty high up in the army by 1881 if he was a Lieutenant Colonel by 1885, his son's marriage. There may possibly be a connection though.

My gut feeling is that David snr was in the British army and was in Canada with his wife when David jnr came along in 1863. It seems strange to me that a Canadian ended up in the Royal navy. Perhaps it's not that strange to others who have more knowledge than I about these things, I have no idea.
