Robert S Hervey Head M 35 England
Doris Hervey Wife F 39 British West Indies
David H Hervey Son M 10 British West Indies
[There's an odd entry for Robt's residence on Apr 1, 1935 of "S Sea, England".
Of course, it could be a novel abbreviation for Southsea (next to Portsmouth), but it could also be an enumerator mistranscription of At Sea]

Great that you've been in touch with the family Nicola, lovely when people take the time to give an update - doesn't matter how long has elapsed.

It's been a VERY BIG gap since I last posted on this thread but there is a very good reason.

We have met and are in regular contact with the two daughters of the above David Hamilton Hervey. They had no idea that they had a large UK family and it has all been a joy to us all.

Many, many thanks again to all those sleuths out there, as always.

And can anyone see Robert's second marriage, please?

Nicola'S

Nicola'S Report 26 Feb 2010 16:21

Wonderful stuff here, so thank you again.

Oakley is a family name, so no surprises there. Quite the opposite in fact as it shows continuity despite being 'across the pond'.

Am puzzled by all the other State entries below the family. Do you know what they mean?

Is there any way of finding out if Marilyn/Sarah and/or Beth can be traced?

Perhaps Marilyn's probable death, too??

PLEASE keep up the good work.

Thank you, thank you.

Sorry, Nicola, I wondered myself about the date of that 411 entry but couldn't find one. I would imagine that it's quite up-to-date.

Thank you to all.

Margaret, please could you tell me the date of the phone directory entry?

Now, please does anyone know how I can go about revealing his probable marriage?????

This will be the next step; a difficult one, I know. But hopefully possible!!

I just came across a list of graduating nursing students at Utica State Hospital, Utica, NY. One of the name is David Hamilton Hervey. It was Sep. 17, 1953. Could it possibly be him? This was from The Utica Daily Press, Sep. 9, 1953.

Oh, how sad.

Yes, it is him. I had managed to get his dob from the Jamaican Records Office a long time ago and it is confirmed as 13.4.29.

How could we begin to find out if he had offspring?? I know that the US records are difficult to crack but this is an important family issue and we are trying to find any descendants.

I have to sign off now. Back tomorrow.

OMG, I've just seen a 'D.H. Hervey, died in 1991' in the Ancestry Worldwide records but I can't access it - I've only got Ancestry co.uk sub.

This could possibly be the son, DAVID HAMILTON HERVEY.

Is there someone out there who could take this further, please?

And perhaps see if there are any US telephone number entries for him, probably as a 'Doctor'.

Wow, SatNav, that was QUICK!

Thank you so much.

So now we know that for some reason husband and wife were not naturalized at the same time.

Can you find their young son's naturalization details, too?

Nicola'S Report 25 Feb 2010 23:45

The first wife and only son of one of my Great Uncles are proving elusive and I would be SO GRATEFUL if some kind person could trawl the US records for me on this one, please.

DORIS VIOLET HARMAN HERVEY, nee Ramsay, married ROBERT SEYMOUR HERVEY in Kingston, Jamaica in 1927. They frequently returned to the UK and I have various passenger lists for these crossings.

However, we know that she died and that he remarried. I have found the United States naturalization record for him in 1940 but no sign of her by then. So perhaps she had already died by this date?

But they also had a son, DAVID HAMILTON HERVEY, born in Jamaica in 1929. I would have expected to find US naturalization details for him, too but negative so far.

What I would be very grateful for is:
1. Record of when Doris died, and where.
2. Was she naturalized?
3. Was their son naturalized?
4. Who Robert was remarried to, when and where?
5. Any trace of their son as an adult? We believe that he was a medical doctor possibly. Theoretically, he could still be alive . . .

Robert died in 1989 in New York state.

I hope that I've written all this out clearly?!

If I don't get back to this immediately, please don't think me rude. I will be on to it tomorrow, though, to see what you've all been up to!

Grateful thanks as always.
