Hi, Have searched 1881 but cannot find Lydia either. It is possible she is staying with relatives and Ancestry being what it is, they may have listed her surname as that of the relatives rather than her true surname. Do you have any info on her grandparents at all? Another alternative was that she was in hospital - sometimes they only used their initials then. I have various missing relatives myself, goodness knows where they all go! Lorraine

Okay...here's where I'm at (thanks to the wonderful people who have helped so much this far!). I have confirmed that William CHAPMAN and Emma MORLEY married in Westminster St Margaret in 1869 (Sep qu, 1a 705). They had the following children: Emma Sep qu 1870 in St Giles 1b 505 Caroline Sep qu 1873 in St Giles 1b 545 Lydia Jun qu 1875 in St Giles 1b 378 or 578 (I have this cert) Charles Henry Dec qu 1877 in St Giles 1b 634 Henry b. c1882 As you can see by the first post of the 1881 census, Emma, Caroline and Chas all appear - but where is Lydia??? I have been unable to find her anywhere. Any ideas? PS I think I have Wm's death in 1886 (Mar qu, 1b 493) in Strand aged 52, assuming his age in the 1871 census is accurate (37, the 1881 makes him younger). I think I have wife Emma's birth in Westminster St Margaret Dec qu 1851. But can't find her death.

Praise must also go to Jennifer as well as she gave me the clue. Saw there was a Lydia listed and thought it worth viewing the image.

Glitter Baby, you are BRILLIANT!!!! (And definitely huge thank you to Jennifer as well!) I assume this means both parents have died...? Very exciting stuff, will look into this! Thank you! PS I recall now that on a later census, Lydia's birthplace is given as Strand!

1891 this might be worth a look RG12/1084/194/7 Strand Union Infant Establishment, Millfield House Tanners End Upper Edmonton Reg District: Edmonton Transcribed as Lydia Gooding but image is Chapman - Gooding is the family above. Lydia Chapman age 15 Charles Chapman age 13 Henry Chapman age 9 It would appear that family members are grouped together Have added a name correction to Ancestry but this will take weeks to show on their system

Hi all Thanks for trying, and yes I will PM you about the 1871 image. The strange part about all this is that my grt grandmother was William & Emma's daughter Lydia CHAPMAN but she is elusive. My previous thinking was that she had been incorrectly transcribed as Caroline in the 1881 census. Her father William is decd by April 1900 when she married. I have her birth certificate that shows she was born July 1875 in Endell Street, St Giles South, Mdsx to Wm CHAPMAN (shoemaker) and Emma nee MORLEY. Any ideas??? Cherilyn

I agree with Lorainne, the caroline she found is the most likely one. It is possible William and Emma were dead by 1891, unless you know different. The daughter Emma may have been married by then. I have found what could be Charles in the Strand Union Infant Establishment. RG12; Piece: 1084; Folio 194; Page 7; Jennifer
