After years of searching for my grandfather William Doherty who was born in Derry and who's father was was also William Doherty and was from Carndonagh, I finally found my great aunt Mary Jane's family.. They live in Scotland and we met up in March of this year... it was an amazing get together and one we aim to repeat next year. It was a difficult search as my great grandfather had lived by another name which I have yet to discover why but I will eventually. He was married twice once as William Quinn and the second as William Quinn Doherty although he lived as a Doherty according to the records I have found on him. Hi first wife my great grandmother died at a young age of 29 in 1904, when he married my great grandmother he did so as William Quinn fathers name William Quinn, they had two children Mary Jane and William Francis. Both children's civil births were recorded as Doherty's but baptismal were recorded as Quinn's. My great grandfather remarried in 1905 as William Quin Doherty fathers name Charles Doherty... So my guess is he had a stepfather... My great grandfather was a blacksmith by trade. He died in 1910 in Omagh.. Now my mission is to find out why and where the Quinn name came in... would love to hear from anyone who has come across the same thing in their tree and how did they deal with it..
