ENH: Enable hyperlinks ACTIONED

Please enable hyperlinks; then one could click on any link, say http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php and be taken straight to a site. I remember being told by genes reunited staff that it may not be possible in the boards as they were but it would be investigated. Well, the boards have changed now :-)
This is the only site that I know where hyperlinks are not enabled.

Thank you.

Prehistoric is what it is.

There is a work-around for people using the most recent Firefox, at least. (And I know you are not, Joy.)

Highlight the text for a link, e.g. the text Joy posted:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php

as if you were going to copy it.

Right click as if you were going to copy it.

Then select "open link in new tab" (my recommendation) or "open link" or "open link in new window".

Then it will work exactly like a hot (clickable) link.

Firefox has solved the problem for people like us using dynosaurus discussion boards.

(Edit -- I wouldn't have known, but when I had a thread on Chat just to seek opinions about the new Firefox, someone, I think DET but could have been TootyFruity, told me about this -- and also about the little dots in the lower right of text boxes that can be used to increase the size of the ridiculously small "add reply" and other boxes at this site.)

Very helpful, thank you, Janey :-)

However, one should not have to change browser.

Please :-)

Yes, I would like to see a link too.

It would also be great to upload pictures and video.....but I expect that is a dream never to come true :-\

That's a good idea, why not start a thread of your own suggesting it as it may get lost in Joy's thread

Probably a non-starter because it contravenes the Site T's and C's

"In particular, you agree not to use the Genes Reunited Service to provide links to third party websites. "

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 3 Jun 2011 20:58

Which can of course be changed.

And which, in any event, has never been enforced since its inception.

I do imagine that this particular rule was intended to prevent using the site for third-party commercial purposes, not for paying members to provide other paying members with directions to useful resources.

By enabling hyperlinks, I do not mean solely to other sites but to other threads within genes reunited, such as
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/ancestors/thread/1270142

Joy, not quite the same thing, as you will appreciate. Other sites are, technically, verboten.....! Internal web pages, a different matter.

Perhaps, you need to modify your original suggestion if it to get a hearing.

Joy

Joy Report 3 Jun 2011 21:37

An hyperlink is an hyperlink :-)
And the matter is being looked into :-)

Joy's right -- trying to direct members to other threads (for instance, to a thread from two years ago about the same family) is sometimes virtually impossible, and involves trying to give an entire lesson in how to copy and paste, where the address bar is, etc.

More than once, I've had people copy and paste the URL I've given them into the search box at Google and say they couldn't find what I was referring them to ...

I don't know whether allowing only internal links would be remotely possible, but even that would be better than now.

This is currently being worked on. For reference (so that we can refer back to it and close off it has a reference #16970). We will let you know when it is going to be released.

Thank you, Phil.
When it has happened, I shall put completed in the title :)

This feature has been released this morning. There was a little hiccup where it included too much in the link, but this has now been corrected.

To make use of this feature on the boards, the just type in the full url including the http portion at the start. If this is not included the link will not display.

EDIT: Note the link will open in a new window so that you can keep you're place on GR if the link takes you to a site outside of GR.

Joy, if you agree that it's now working - can you update the title please.

I will be posting a blog in the next 24 hours about some of the other changes that we have implemented today. Phil

Thank you, Phil.
Rootschat worked, as did the link to a thread within genes reunited.
Just testing http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/7416645.stm http://www.holmesdale.net/ http://mcleanmuir.proboards.com/index.cgi? http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/ http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/

:-S jumped about after the confused emoticon! - tried to put a smile after your name when I did the edit but it would only go right at the end.

Edit - all the above worked, thank you :)
